Research suggests that people who spend a lot of time on the Internet have a higher chance of developing depression .
Psychologists university in the English city of Leeds have found that people who spend more time on social networking sites or pages of " chat " actually spend less time in actual social interactions , which can have harmful effects on health their mental health.
The team studied a group of 1319 people aged 16-51 use the Internet , and the results are compared to the symptoms of depression .
They found that 1.2 percent of survey participants , mostly young , are depending on the internet and that these users are more severe signs of depression .
" Our research indicates that excessive internet use is associated with depression , but we do not know what show it - if it pulls or Internet is the cause of depression ," Researcher Dr Morrison explained .
Symptoms of depression vary from person to person , but include sleep problems , lethargy , hopelessness , loss of appetite , nervous and problems with concentration
